The Enfield Poets’ Poetry Competition: now open for entries

The Enfield Poets’ Poetry Competition is now open for entries – and we’re really excited to announce that the competition will be judged by Ruth Padel.

Closing date: 7th March 2020

The Enfield Poets are celebrating their Twentieth Anniversary in April 2020. The winners will be announced at the end of March , and the prize giving will be on Saturday April 25th, 2020, as part of the Enfield Poets’ 20th Anniversary Literary Festival.

Details:

  • The Competition is open to poems on any theme and in any form and must be the original work of the author.
  • Poets entering the Competition must be 16 years or older.
  • Poems should be no more than 50 lines in length, excluding title.
  • Poems should not have been previously published.
  • The decision of the judges is final and no correspondence will be entered into.
  • Submissions may be made online or by post. Please refer to How to Enter for more details.

Prizes:

  • First Prize: £500
  • Second Prize: £250
  • Third Prize: £100

Fees:

Competitors may submit any number of poems for a fee of £4 per poem, or £10 for three poems.

Ruth PadelRuth Padel’s most recent collections are Beethoven Variations – Poems on a Life, a journey through Beethoven’s life and her own childhood, growing up playing the viola, and Emerald, a lyrical exploration of the mourning process and a celebration of her feisty mother. She was Chair of Judges for the 2016 T S Eliot Prize and Judge for the 2016 International Man Booker Prize. How to Enter

  1. Each poem should be in English. One poem per page. All poems should be saved in one document named ‘Poems EP Competition’. Only Word or PDF formats will be accepted.
  2. Competitors’ names and addresses must not appear anywhere on the poems. Please write the titles and your contact details clearly on the Entry Form and save it as ‘Your Full Name_Entry Form’.
  3. Click on Buy Now button below to make the applicable payment. You will be issued a Transaction ID or Receipt Number. Make a note of this.
  4. Send your poems, entry form and PayPay payment confirmation (please include the Transaction ID) to competition@enfieldpoets.com Please put ‘Poetry Competition-Submission’ in the email Subject line.
  5. You will receive an automatic acknowledgement.
  6. Entries must be received by midnight on 7th March 2020.







No need to have a PayPal account. You can pay by Debit or Credit Card. You can submit any number of poems for a fee of £4 per poem, or £10 for three poems.

  1. Each poem should be typed in English or handwritten neatly on one side only of A4 paper. One poem only on each sheet.
  2. Competitors’ names and addresses must not appear anywhere on the poems. Please write the titles and your contact details clearly on the Entry Form.
  3. Please include a cheque payable to The Enfield Poets (Sterling only) for all poems you would like to submit (£4 per poem or £10 for three poems).
  4. Complete the entry form in block capitals and send with your poems and payment (Sterling only) to: The Competition Secretary, Enfield Poets’ Poetry Competition, The Dugdale Centre, 39 London Road, Enfield EN2 6DS.
  5. Entries must be received by midnight on 7th March 2020 (not posted 7th March 2020).
